{71985 {4- {6Ex-Depeche Mode, Yazoo and The
Assembly keyboard player, Vince Clarke
decides to form another band and holds
auditions for a singer. Andy Bell
stands out from the rest and Erasure
are born. The first two singles are
released and neither are hits. "Who
Needs Love (Like That)" got to No.55
and "Heavenly Action" did a lot worse
and only got to No.100.
{71986 {4- {6Undaunted, they released their
third single "Oh L'amour" which only
got to No.85. They also released
their debut (and considered by many
fans to be their best) album this year
entitled "Wonderland". It reached
number 71 in the album charts. Not a
very promising start. But, by the end
of 1986 Erasure would become household
names and synonymous with high-quality
electro-pop. "Sometimes" (the first
single from their second album "the
Circus") stormed up the charts
eventually peaking at No.2. Success
at last!
{tc{71987 {4- {6 This year saw the release of
their second LP "The Circus" and a
tour and tour video (Live At The
Seaside). The Circus spawned three
top ten hits and "It Doesn't Have To
Be" which reached No.12.
{71988 {4- {6 "Ship Of Fools" the first
single to be released from their third
LP "The Innocents" was also a top ten
hit (No.6) but the album itself was
their first No.1 hit album. Again,
they toured and put out another live
video, imaginatively entitled "The
Innocents". As 1988 drew to a close,
they released a 4 track EP with new
songs fronted by the very catchy
"Stop". "The Crackers International
EP" went to No.2 giving them their
biggest hit for two years since
"Sometimes" was released.
{71989 {4-{6 This year saw the release of
their disappointing "Wild!" album. I
can say that quite a few of their fans
went off them with the advent of this
album but it, like its predecessor,
went to No.1 in the charts. Another
tour and live video followed in 1990.
{71990 {4- {6 The last two singles from the
"Wild!" LP were released. They were
"Blue Savannah" and "Star".
{71991 {4- {6 After approximately a year's
break, Erasure returned with an
excellent new single and an album both
called "Chorus". "Chorus" the LP was
miles better than "Wild!" and their
finest since 1987's "The Circus".
This year's tour followed the Pet Shop
Boys' lead and was "theatrical" and
phatasmagorical entertainment it was
too!
{tc
{71992 {4- {6 Their first UK number one hit
single at last! Only trouble is, it
was their rather questionnable
"Abb-Esque" Abba covers EP. The
remixes were good anyway! 1992 also
saw the release of a greatest hits
album "POP! : The First 20 Hits".
"Who Needs Love (Like That)" also made
a second appearance (in remixed form)
and secured the high chart position it
should have got the first time round.
And that's the last we heard from
Erasure, but expect a new single and
LP soon.
